Psalms 43:4 says, ”God is our exceeding joy.” David was telling us that God is our exceeding joy and He can lift us up out of depression to praise. The greatest joy you will ever have will come when you are in a right relationship with God. Psalms 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord.”
The world did not give me this joy. This joy is far superior than what the world has. Jesus told the Samaritan woman, “Drink of the world’s water and you will thirst again, but whosoever drinks of the water that I shall give will never thirst again.” You will never find peace and contentment in the things of this world. The things of this world will fade and pass away, they are temporal, but you can find true and exceeding joy in the Lord.
There is exceeding joy in worship. Our text in Psalms 44:4 says, “I will go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy, upon the harp I will praise Him.”Joy in God expresses itself in praise and worship. In church, people worship God in different ways. Some worship in a quiet fashion and others are more exuberant. Our souls are lifted up into exceeding joy as we worship and sing praises unto the Lord.
God is my exceeding joy. Zephaniah 3:17 says, “God rejoices over us with joy, and He joys over you with singing." David said in Psalms 43:5, “Why are you cast down, O my soul? and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I will praise Him because He is the health of my countenance and my God.”
The prescription for joy is found in the Lord. The Bible tells us that the joy of the Lord is our strength. In this sad world that we live in, we need the exceeding joy of God. God is not some tyrant who wants to make it hard on us. God is love, and He is full of joy. God has thoughts of peace, and not of evil toward us.
God is my exceeding joy and that gives me strength to face every challenge that comes my way. David encouraged himself in God’s exceeding joy. Purpose in your life for this new year to let God’s exceeding joy lead and direct your life.
