The Shafter High Lady Generals basketball team came away with the Consolation Championship at the Arvin Showcase Tourney this past weekend. Also for the Lady Generals, Alexia Ramirez was selected for the All-Tournament team. Ramirez averaged 19 points a game, 10 rebounds and four assists a game.
According to Head Coach Juan Zavala, the Arvin tournament is one of the toughest tournaments in the area. "This is a very competitive tournament. There was a total of 56 teams this year, with several of them ranked. "
Zavala said that all of their games were hard-fought games, with the team finishing the tourney with a 2-1 record. The Lady Generals opened the tournament with a tough task, taking on the powerful team from Cabrillo High in Lompoc. Cabrillo used a team effort to outlast the Lady Generals by a score of 47-34. Shafter has been averaging over 50 points per game up until this game.
Shafter then took the court against the Ridgeview Wolfpack. This was a tough game, with Shafter coming out on top by a 42-40 score. The game was tight most of the way, with the Lady Generals getting a couple of key stops and baskets in the final minutes.
In the Consolation Championship game, the Lady Generals ran out to a big lead against the Sanger Apaches, eventually pulling away for a 61-39 victory.
The lead kept growing as the game progressed.
Shafter's next opponent is going to be on Tuesday, Jan. 7, against the Delano Tigers. Zavala said that the Lady Generals' toughest competition for a third consecutive SSL championship is going to be McFarland and Taft. But, as pointed out by Zavala, Shafter is ranked to be the champion of the SSL season by a clear margin.
