A colorful start to this year's Rose Festival

The Wasco Recreation and Parks District's Run for the Roses Color Blast Fun Run proved to be a lively and vibrant morning for participants of all ages and skill levels. Some enjoyed a leisurely 3K walk, while others took on the more challenging 5K run. Whether walking or running, the event provided a unique opportunity for the community to come together in anticipation of the exciting Rose Festival activities that would follow.

The WRPD's district manager, Chris Serna, expressed her enthusiasm. "We had a great turnout this morning with about 50 runners. We had the WRPD Trailblazers cross country team and people from the community supporting the fun run fundraiser for the annual fireworks event. Our volunteers included the ChainBreakers softball team, local college students, high school students, and even our own kids. It's great to see so many people contributing to this community effort."

Reflecting on the event's spirit, Serna noted the delight it brought to everyone. "It was an explosion of colors, and it was just what we were hoping for. I think everyone left really happy and had a great, colorful time. This is what kicks off the festivities at Barker Park. It's a tradition we started and one we hope to continue for many years to come."

Many moments stood out during the fun run, but for Serna, one in particular made a lasting impression. "It was watching those faces come through the finish line full of color and joy. It's always something fun to see. We at the WRPD always enjoy putting on these events for the community. The end result is gratifying, and the work we put in is always worth it."

Brenda Esparza, who completed the 5K in 32 minutes, said, "This run was fantastic. I loved seeing people bring their dogs-it added a special touch. I thought that was really cute. But it was the little kids who motivated us the most. If they can do it, we can do it, too."

German Rios, a Wasco High School history teacher, hadn't run in years after spending four years in Sacramento. "What better way to get back into running than in a community event like this?" he said, adding, "I embraced running through the colors and danced through it with the help of the music, which added to the festive energy. Plus, having people cheer us on was great.

"Seeing my dog Rayo run with me, alongside my fiancée, Ana Orozco, who came to support me, was a highlight. I'm looking forward to the next one. I hope there's more."

First-place winner Aldo Ramirez, who finished the 5K in 18 minutes, expressed his excitement. "I'm not an experienced runner, and this was my first time doing something like this. It was awesome. I was just trying to support my community. After this, I'll be heading to Barker Park, visiting booths while wearing my colors. I'm proud to say I ran the 5K and represented the beautiful city of Wasco."
