Strata and CRC sponsor Wasco students for Camp KEEP

Strata Credit Union and California Resources Corporation presented sponsorship checks totaling $250,000 at the Wasco Union Elementary School District's Back to School Night, held last week at Palm Avenue Middle School and Thomas Jefferson Middle School. The event was a celebration of community support, with parents, friends and media in attendance.

The donation underscores Strata Credit Union and CRC's commitment to local education and environmental stewardship. Together, the two organizations are providing tuition, transportation and supplies for 280 students to attend Camp KEEP, ensuring that 6th-grade students from Wasco Union Elementary School District can participate in the program, regardless of financial constraints.

Camp KEEP is a weeklong environmental education program on the Central Coast of California. The program offers hands-on learning experiences, allowing students to explore and appreciate the natural world. The ecological concepts taught in the natural environment complement the school district's indoor science curriculum. Through interactive activities, students gain a deeper understanding of environmental science, ecology and conservation.

"We are delighted to support the students of Palm Avenue Middle School and Thomas Jefferson Middle School in their journey to Camp KEEP," said Brandon Ivie, CEO of Strata Credit Union. "Education is at the heart of our community, and we believe that experiences like Camp KEEP are invaluable for fostering a lifelong appreciation of nature and environmental stewardship."

Kelly Fargo, Strata's vice presdent of community relations, shared the inspiration behind the initiative and their $150,000 gift: "The idea was born out of a desire to do something special to celebrate the credit union's 75th anniversary. We approached the school district, hoping to sponsor a handful of students who couldn't afford to attend. When we learned that none of the students in the district had ever attended because of the $400 price tag, we knew we needed to help. CRC was on board to help with a $100,000 donation, and we are so grateful for their support."

Omar Hayat, CRC executive vice president of operations, added, "CRC is proud to help provide Wasco students with unforgettable experiences that will have long-lasting positive impacts on their lives. Our hope is that students are inspired at Camp KEEP to pursue rewarding STEM careers and become the future leaders who join CRC and others in innovating a better energy future for Californians for generations to come."

Camp KEEP offers a variety of activities such as tide pool exploration, wildlife observation, hiking and team-building exercises, all aimed at fostering environmental awareness and personal growth. By sponsoring these students, Strata Credit Union and CRC aim to make a lasting impact on their educational journey and inspire them to become future environmental leaders.

"We are incredibly grateful to Strata Credit Union and CRC for their generous sponsorship," said Brad Maberry, Wasco Union Elementary School District superintendent. "Establishing community partnerships has been a key priority in our district this year and continues to be a priority moving forward. This opportunity will not only enhance our students' understanding of the environment but also instill in them a sense of responsibility towards preserving it for future generations."
