Serving the community since 1970
The students in the Richland School District received a big helping hand when it comes to preparing for this school year.
Last week, students were given free backpacks, paper, pencils and other school supplies that will get them ready for the fall session, beginning on Wednesday, Aug. 14.
Thanks to the support from the Shafter Lions Club, as well as members of the Shafter community, all of the children who were at the Golden Oak event received a backpack.
On Saturday, Aug. 3, the Lions Club held a Stuff the Bus drive, collecting donations in the Dollar General parking lot. The event also had Acelerados Offroad members there, showing off their all-terrain vehicles, even letting the kids sit on them for a bit.
The distribution of the items took place this past week, with the bus delivering the goods to the school district, with a load of volunteers helping unload the backpacks and other items and handing them out to the students who need supplies.
"I think this is just great," said Sylvia Moreno, who has two children who attend Richland schools. "Sometimes you can get slammed this time of year and a little help is so appreciated."
