Wasco High 1974: A 50-year celebration

The Wasco High School Class of 1974 will hold its 50th reunion on Saturday, Oct. 5. It's been 20 years since the last reunion, and it promises to be a time to reconnect, reminisce and celebrate the significant milestone.

Denise Hamlin is the event committee chair. "We are looking forward to everyone having a wonderful evening, reuniting and creating new memories," she says.

When asked what the night's highlight will be, she said, "It's hard to say. It will be specific for all there. It may be just seeing someone not seen in 50 years. It may be having people remember or recognize you without being told who you are. It will most likely be the fun and laughter that will be shared as we reflect on old times."

Several alums are coming from out of state, including Texas, Colorado, Iowa, Arizona, Washington, Idaho and Nevada.

Hamlin and her team have been working on the reunion for over a year, trying to find their former fellow students and meeting almost monthly since April 2023. Committee members include David Lucas, Freda McGuire Burke, Jan Roskam Slinkard, Penny Hall Skeels, Kaye Lynn Wright Loyd, Lynne Warkentine Florence, Jerry Rice, Leslie Laughlin, Terry Johnson Newman, Mary Sue Dillingham Powell, Wanda Montgomery Pierce and Janet Young Drescher.

"We hope for a good turnout. The committee has been working hard to contact as many alums as possible. We have set up a group on Facebook, Wasco High Class of '74, to help, but there are others we still need to get in touch with."

Some of those are Dennis Acosta, Javier Gaona, Randy Jones, Greg Morris, John Bryant, Tina Castillo, Nancy Dobrenen, Benny Edmonds, Sonya Ekrann, Sharon Helms, Barbara Ibarra, Kathy Jones, Dewey Ledbetter, Aurora Lerma, David Luna, Greg Morris, Valerie Patten Pasqual Perez, Margarita Perez, David Prince, Lidia Ramirez, Augustine Rodriguez, Suzanne Rodriguez, Henry Silver, Jesse Tatum, Brenda Townsend, Jose Trujillo Mollie Turner, Chuck Warner and Dennis Whitworth.

The event will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Rio Bravo Country Club, 15200 Casa Club Drive, Bakersfield. A social hour will be from 5 to 6 p.m., followed by dinner and a program. The cost is $85 per person. Those interested are asked to RSVP by Monday, Sept. 16.
