Though it places most of its dogs with rescue organizations, the Shafter Animal Shelter is looking for good homes for their feline residents needing a loving home.
Animal Control Officer Nick Riddick said that the shelter has some loveable cats who would make a great additions to welcoming homes. "Cats are great family members and can be as loyal and loving as a dog."
Riddick also wanted to let the public know that the shelter does have dogs for adoption as well. If they know someone is cooking for a certain kind of dog, they will put the name on a wish list, and when a dog comes in that fits the profile, the prospective adopter will be contacted.
"We never want the residents to think that we are not wanting to adopt out our dogs. We do what is best for the animals, and giving them a loving home is the first priority. If that is with a family in Shafter then that is what we would want." The shelter also runs regular adoption events for their cats at the Petsmart on Olive Drive each Saturday.
You can always come out to the shelter, 18849 S. Shafter Ave., to visit them or call them at 661-746-2140. The shelter is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays they are open from 1 to 7 p.m.
Riddick said that he is grateful to their rescue partners who consistently find new homes for their animals. But he also loves seeing animals going to our local residents as well. "Giving the animal a great home is always our top priority," he said.
This week, the shelter is featuring a feline sweetheart who is a little over 3 years old. Her name is Newbie and she has been neutered and is current and up to date on her shots as well.
She is loveable and is ready for a loving home, Riddick said.
Riddick encourages those wanting more information on the adoption process or to find out more about the wish list to contact Shafter Animal Control at 661-746-2140.
