Pastor's Corner: God remembers and honors service

This weekend, we celebrate Memorial Day, the day of remembrance, where we honor the memory of our soldiers who gave their lives defending our nation and our freedom. Unfortunately, for many it is just another three-day weekend marking the beginning of the summer season, when it should be an opportunity to reflect on the gratitude and honor we owe to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the rest of us.

For most, it is not mere ingratitude, but inattention caused by stressful, busy lives and our human tendency to forget. It is good to know that our amazing God has no memory issues and, though we seldom offer Him the honor and gratitude that He is continually due, He is faithful to remember our every effort and sacrifice.

Hebrews 6:10 encourages us that God will never forget our efforts on behalf of others. He always honors and rewards faithful service. So often, our service to others seems thankless, but God promises a good reward, even if those we serve seem indifferent. “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.” Galatians 6:9-10.

So, as a way of honoring our national heroes, attend the parades, put flowers on graves and take time this weekend to remember their service and sacrifice. But let us also serve our families, our community and yes, our nation, faithfully in all the ways we can, refusing to allow any perceived ingratitude to discourage us from doing good.

We declare this blessing from Psalm 20:3-5 over our fallen soldiers and over each of you, knowing that our God is faithful, fair and forgets nothing:

“May (God) remember all your sacrifices and accept your burnt offerings.

May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.

May we shout for joy over your victory and lift up our banners in the name of our God.

May the Lord grant all your requests!”
