The Shafter High School track and field team is off to a quick start, with a strong showing at the Kern Invitational track meet last weekend.
The highlight was sophomore Jocelyn Pierucci, who won the discus event, throwing a distance of over 122 feet, outdistancing her competition by 22 feet. Pierucci is continuing her high school athletic career after having an outstanding freshman season, advancing all the way to the Central Section Masters meet, just missing qualifying for the State track meet.
Joining Pierucci in the top 10 of the discus event were teammates Gabrielle Gonzalez and Lauren Givens, who placed 8th and 9th respectively.
Other strong showings for the Lady Generals was the 4X100 meter relay team, who finished in 6th place with a time of 54.13 seconds.
Airem Soto won 10th place in the girls 1600 meter run with a time of 5:40. Also placing for the Lady Generals were Kaylee Moreno, who finished in 17th place in the 400 meter dash and Camryn Eubanks, who placed in the top 20 in the 100 meter dash.
On the boys' side, Moises Aguilar led the Generals with a second place finish in the triple jump, going over 39 feet. Roberto Aguirre got 13th place in the event. Daniel Olvera had a toss of 133 feet in the discus for 6th place in the event. Michael VanderPoel joined Olvera with a 10th place.
Also placing for the Generals were the boys 4X100 relay team, which finished in 8th place with a time of 45.55 seconds, and the 4X400 relay team, which got 10th place with a time of 3:49.
The teams will next be the Delano Relays on Friday, March 14, with the first SSL Powermeet being held at McFarland High School on March 20.
