Fernando’s passion for the outdoors was a vital part of his being. His backpacking stories from the Sierras and Mineral King not only fascinated those around him but served as a testament to his adventurous spirit and zest for life. In the year prior to undergoing open heart surgery, he led a group of Boy Scouts from Shafter on a 50-mile backpacking trip through the John Muir Wilderness. Despite facing disabilities later in life, his unwavering determination proved how limitations could never hinder his love for fitness or his pursuit of exploration.
