WRPD flag football registration open

The Wasco Recreation and Parks District is currently accepting registrations for its Co-Ed Youth Flag Football League, with the registration period running through Friday, Jan. 26. This league offers kids a fun and engaging opportunity to stay active and fosters qualities like confidence, teamwork and sportsmanship, organizers say.

Youth also learn life skills, setting them up for success on and off the field. Chris Serna, WRPD manager, said, "The game inspires character, leadership, resilience and teamwork – key life skills that transfer from the huddle to the classroom and beyond."

The sport of flag football provides a full-body workout, strengthening muscles and improving cardiovascular health, agility and coordination. "The fast-paced nature of the game requires quick reflexes and sharp hand-eye coordination," Serna said.

It's fun for both boys and girls. "As a noncontact team sport, kids get all the physical, emotional, and social benefits of playing NFL flag football without the physical contact. But more than anything, NFL flag football is pure fun - no matter your skill level. Teams compete 5 on 5, creating tons of engagement on the field at a fast-moving pace."

She encourages parents to sign up their children. "Flag football is a great way for boys and girls to learn the game, and playing a team sport like flag football enforces a child's ability to function as part of a greater whole. Not only do they learn to strategize and plan with others, but they come to understand how important it is to think of benefits outside themselves."

Serna said it's more than just about winning. "Flag football provides an avenue for a child to celebrate their achievements, from winning games to growing their trophy collection to tracking progress and improvement in skills."

Registration is $70. Games begin Saturday, Feb. 17, through Saturday, March 23 and are held Saturday mornings at the Barker Park ball field. The league is open to youth ages 7 to 14, with tryouts for 10u (9-10) and 14u (11-14) divisions on Tuesday, Jan. 30, and Thursday, Feb. 1.

The WRPD is currently also recruiting coaches for the league. Serna said, "Coaching a youth sports team can be a tremendously rewarding experience, allowing the coaches to help young players learn the game of flag football in a fun and safe atmosphere."

"Additionally, the bond created by a parent coaching their child is one that will be cherished and remembered for years to come. It allows coaches to help young players grow, learn, face challenges and experience success."

Register online at WascoParks.RecDesk.com, at the WRPD office at 1280 Poplar Ave. Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or by calling 661- 758-3081.
