Shafter band places fourth at Centennial

The Shafter High Marching Band placed fourth in their division at the annual Music in Motion Band competition at Centennial High School on Saturday.

Over 20 high schools from throughout the Central Valley were competing at the event. The SHS band, drum major Caleb Previtt, performed a competition routine, "Into Space."

The performance was filled with horns, drums and a lot of percussion, including xylophones, bells and other instruments.

The band has practiced since the beginning of school, working on their musicianship, timing, rhythm and movements, which have to be on point with the rest of the team, including the color guard and flag corps.

Drum major Previtt, who will be traveling to London to perform at a New Year's Day parade there, said that this event was a great start to the competition season. "We have the pieces we need to be a competitive presence in our division," he said. "We need to focus on execution and mindset. We are excited for the rest of the season, and we are hoping to see our community in the stands supporting us."

The team performs at halftime of the Shafter Generals Football home games and also will be competing in several events in the coming months.
