Robert Harold Merz

Nov. 21, 1933 – Aug. 18, 2023

Robert Harold Merz was born to Eula Wilson Merz and Martin Robert Merz on Nov. 21,1933, in McFarland. Robert went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on Aug. 18, 2023, at the age of 89.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Frederick, grandson Stephen Matthew Merz, first wife Caroline, second wife Donna Dalke Lynch Merz and third wife Vivian Handel Baze Merz. He is survived by his brother Martin Daniel Merz (Joan), son Stephen Merz (Marcia), Rebecca and Kathleen, daughter Janet Merz (James Bruce), Chase and Gabrielle, and son Eric Merz (Gaylene) Martina, Aaron (Leandra) and children Ava, Jabari, Jasmine, Marianne and Suzanne (Shane Reno), totalling eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Robert graduated from Richland Elementary, Shafter High School and Stanford University. After serving four years in the U.S. Army as a first lieutenant, he farmed the remainder of his career, growing cotton, alfalfa, sugar beets, potatoes, wheat and almonds.

Robert served on the following boards of directors: Wasco Potato Growers, Growers' Cooperative Gin, Wasco Union High School, North Kern Vocational, Poso Park Association, and as elder of Ebenezer Reformed Church. He was a member of the 20/30 Club, and the Exchange Club, and served as a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts. He also enjoyed playing cribbage with friends and fishing.

Robert will be remembered for his loyalty, integrity, quick wittedness and serving spirit. He cared for three ailing wives up until the time his body would not let him do what his head and heart desired so strongly. He feared and loved the Lord. Robert always strived to do things the right way. He will be missed dearly.

Services will be held Saturday, Aug. 26 at 10:30 a.m. at Ebenezer Reformed Church, 235 James St., Shafter.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Valle de Gracia mission works through Ebenezer Reformed Church, Shafter.
