A parade downtown and a variety of events at Mannel Park will highlight this year's Cinco de Mayo celebration on Saturday, April 29.
The Shafter Cinco de Mayo Committee is putting on the annual event, including the parade filled with bands, classic cars, local clubs and organizations, as well as the traditional horses and their riders.
Grand marshals for the festivities are Miguel Ayon and the Shafter Boxing Club, who have been putting Shafter on the boxing map for over a decade. There also will be trophies and special awards given out at the park following the parade.
The parade begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday downtown. Immediately following the parade, Mannel Park will host a wide variety of food vendors, games, activities for kids, music and much more. There also will be arts and crafts for the kids and a car show at the park, with a large number of vintage cars and trucks, from classic dreams to souped-up hot rods.
At 11:30 a.m. at Mannel Park, Mariachi-Los Toros de Mexico will be performing, with a special guest appearance by the Richland School District Mariachi Strings. The Shafter Recreation and Parks District Golden Dancers Senior Folklorico will follow them for a performance.
At 4 p.m., the Original Majesticks will entertain the crowd.
There will be a variety of food at the event, from tacos, burritos and burgers, to barbecue.
