Wasco baseball beginning season strong

Wasco High’s varsity baseball team hit the ground running this season with a 7-2 win rate as they enter league play.

The varsity played their first game of the year against Morro Bay High School and won, 9-3. Next, the varsity team made quick

work of Corcoran, 16-3, and Exeter, 10-2.

The team fought a close match against Independence from Bakersfield, coming out on top with a 3-2 win.

Cesar Chavez, of Delano, got shut out,

3-0, and North High was beaten 13-3. Next,

a landslide victory against Golden Valley,

25-3.

So far the team has only lost to Mission

Oak, of Tulare, 7-3, and Garces, 9-1.

Though league play has not yet begun,

these scores are demonstrative of the skills

of Wasco High’s baseball team.

“Expectations are always high for our

program,” said Jeffery Wedell, Wasco head

coach. “We believe we have a young squad

that can contend for not only an SSL title

but a section title as well.” This season will

be Wedell’s tenth season as head coach.

According to Wedell, some standout

players to look out for are Isaiah Delarosa,

senior third baseman/pitcher; Colin Dickson,

junior pitcher/first baseman; Isaiah

Juarez, junior center fielder/pitcher; Emilio

Martinez, junior second baseman/pitcher;

Christian Rios, junior shortstop/pitcher;

and Sebastian Aguilar, junior catcher.

Varsity baseball’s first league game of

the year was against Mcfarland on Tuesday.

Currently, Mcfarland is 4-8 overall and at a

.333 win percentage.

“The SSL is going to be extremely competitive

this year with Taft, Arvin, RFK, Chavez

and a much-improved McFarland,” Wedell said.

Out of the potential rivalries, Wedell

pointed out Taft.

“We’ve had some really good battles in

my tenure as the head coach,” Wedell said

of Taft. “You can never not say Shafter

when talking rivalries no matter what sport

you're participating in at Wasco High.”

Just like with every other Wasco High

sport, it’s in the spectator's best interests to

look out for the Wasco-Shafter match up.

Currently, Shafter stands at 8-4 this season.

You can witness this matchup on Tuesday,

April 19, at 4 p.m.
