The Shafter Kiwanis Club announced their honorees for May's Terrific Kids, which recognize students from the Richland School District.
The Kiwanis Club honored those students virtually to celebrate those students who have exhibited the character traits outlined in the program's mission statement. Each month there is a different trait that students are recognized for.
Those traits that the Kiwanis and the school's teachers are looking for include thoughtful, enthusiastic, respectful, responsible, inclusive, friendly, inquisitive and capable.
May's trait is respectful. Teachers from the Richland School District nominate students who exhibit that trait. Each student receives a certificate, a pencil, bumper sticker, and a t-shirt.
Those students named for May are Adalea Leon, a sixth grader from Golden Oak Elementary, Sequoia Elementary first grader George Quinonez and second grader Janie Rodriguez.
From Redwood Elementary, sixth grader Yelitza Osuna was recognized as their Terrific Kid.
Also from Redwood, Jesus Valdivia is in the fourth grade and has been recognized for his respectfulness.
The Shafter Kiwanis Club has been recognizing local students for over two decades and has been instrumental in the development of local youth, including their Terrific Kids program, as well as their annual New Teachers Luncheon, as well as different programs that they support that help students inside the classroom and outside of the classroom.
