Pastor's Corner: Depression

Depression is something we never really want to confront, or discuss. However, at some point in our lives every one of us will experience, at the very least, some symptom(s) of depression.

As complex human beings, we are capable of the highest highs, and the lowest lows. Some individuals experience minor depression that lasts only a few days or even a few months, but usually disappears with time. Others suffer long-term, or continual, depression and may even be a symptom of psychiatric or physical illness.

Depression is a common word that describes a multiplicity of symptoms ranging from “the blues,” to “down in the dump,” to more severe thoughts of suicide. With depression comes a feeling of much sadness, gloom, dejection, anxiety, hopelessness, disturbed sleeping patterns, withdrawal, energy loss, loss of interest, and even a loss of appetite.

As a pastor, I’ve seen individuals suffer depression because of losing a loved one, a job, financial security, or suffer a traumatic event in their life that deeply wounded them. Even recent events have brought many people to a depressive state. Depression can leave many people feeling very helpless. However, make no mistake, there is help!

You are not helpless. You are not hopeless. You are not doomed. First and foremost, God’s word says, “Do not fear, for I am with you, do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you (Isaiah 41:10)” If you are depressed, don’t carry that heavy weight alone. Don’t be self-defeated! Reach out to someone who cares. Some, who have severe symptoms, may have to connect with a doctor, counselor, psychiatrist, and/or pastor. Others, with a close loved one, or a friend.

But don’t ever forget, God Cares! ”Cast all of your anxieties on him, because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).
