The Wasco Animal Shelter has been temporarily closed since mid-March when all workplaces began closing to walk-in customers due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“The shelter is currently closed to the public for all viewings and adoptions,” Fidel Lara, one of the two animal control specialists at the shelter, said Monday. “As of now, we are not full. We have room so we can pick up more animals.”
Lara stated that the shelter is only responding to emergency calls yet continues to pick up stray animals.
“We are not euthanizing animals unless it’s necessary because the animal is close to death and there is no other option,” Lara said.
“This is for the protection and safety of the public.”
The shelter advises everyone to keep a good eye on their pet so they don’t get out and run loose, only to be picked up by animal control. When this happens, retrieving a lost animal will result in fees for the owner.
