Vanguard a practice that cares

Vanguard Medical Corp. is run like the medical practices of old.

The medical practices at 565 Kern St. in Shafter and 845 7th St. in Wasco are rural health clinics. Each is a primary care facility comprised of three doctors, one part-time obstetrician, one physician's assistant and one chiropractor.

The staff works to be friendly and welcoming to all who enter their doors. "We serve a lot of elderly patients," Sunner said. "We offer a more personalized medical office for our patients, and we go above and beyond by helping our patients with their referrals and services."

The medical staff is made up of Dr. Chan H. Park, M.D., Jae J. Kim, M.D., Chibuike Anucha, M.D., Jose Reyes, D.C., Mary Jane Maun Viduya, PA-C, and Ludim Vielman, PA-C.

Dr. Kim had his own private practice in Wasco before joining Vanguard. Several of the doctors and staff members previously worked at Omni Family Health.

"We serve about 2,000 patients a month between the two facilities," Sunner said. "A new patient pays $150 for the first visit and a return visit is estimated at $80."

"If a patient comes in with no insurance, he can self-pay," administrator Novira Sunner said. "We serve clients with many different types of medical insurance coverage."

Some of the covered insurance carriers include Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Aetna, United Healthcare, Kern Family Medical Clinic and Bakersfield Family Medical Clinic. The facility takes Medicare and Medi Cal patients as well.

The clinic is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m.-noon (second and fourth Saturdays only).
