Approximately 600 students attended the Palm Avenue Middle School career fair held in the cafeteria last week.

Principal Oscar Luna opened the first-ever event Thursday, with students eagerly checking out the different career opportunities. They entered the cafeteria prepared with a list of work-related questions, which often led to more questions and longer conversations between vendors and students.

The event began with sixth graders at the business tables with questions in hand, ready to receive a stamp to prove they asked a job-related question.

Prior to the beginning of the career fair, organizations set up their tables with candy, and many also had free giveaways.

Some of the organizations represented included the U.S. Army, the city’s Animal Shelter, the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, Bakersfield College, College Community Services and Wasco High School. Other tables offered information on available technical jobs, library careers and careers in nursing.

Associated Student Body members were the official greeters and help organizations set up stations.

Palm avenue 2019-2020 student body Ooficers are President Devanie Caban, Vice President Yareli Sanchez, Administrator Addison Fore Vasquez, Treasurer Antonio Maldonado, Sergeant at Arms Nubia Garcia, Eighth Grade Campus Representative Emiliee Garza, Eighth Grade Campus Representative Diego Gomez, Seventh Grade Campus Representative Waood Saeed, Seventh Grade Campus Representative Ariadne Orozco, Sixth Grade Campus Representative Diana Leon, Sixth Grade Campus Representative Emma Gomez, Leadership Member Yanitzia Vargas, Leadership Member Yvette Torres, Leadership Member Ramon Mendez and Advisor Joshua Brockert.

According to Luna, there were about 35 organizations represented at the event.

“College and Career Day at Palm Avenue Middle School was a true success,” Luna said. “Our Wasco community came together to provide valuable knowledge to our students that will help them thrive in middle school and beyond.”

Luna added that the student feedback was positive, and credited counselor Elena Contreras and her committee for all their hard work to make the day possible.
