Vehicle hits student walking to school

A student at Palm Avenue Elementary School was struck by a car on Feb. 6 while walking to school.

The student went to the hospital with minor injuries, according to Superintendent Kelly Richers. The victim was released and was back in school this week.

"By the time I got to the site, the student who was hit had been transported to the hospital and most witnesses were gone,"

The three students walking together were in a crosswalk on the west side of Palm Avenue crossing Sunset on their way to the school.

According to the Kern County Sheriff's Department, the vehicle rolled slowly through the stop sign on Sunset without making a complete stop. While there is no stop sign on Palm Avenue, there is one on Sunset turning onto Palm.

Sergeant Augustin Moreno of the Kern County Sheriff's Office confirmed the details of the incident. "The student was taken to the hospital for minor injury as a precaution. Alcohol was not involved, and the driver remained at the scene and was cooperative."
