The Shafter High Lady Generals softball team advanced to the Central Section Division V Championship game with a 5-4 win against Bakersfield Christian on Tuesday afternoon. The top-ranked hosts sprinted out to a 5-0 lead by the fourth inning, thanks to some clutch hitting by Nataly Espinoza, Serenity Angulo and Alicia Pompa, who all reached base to load them up with one out. This year is pitcher Ryan Schroeder's first year on the Reserve team. He was born and raised in San Diego and played at University City High School and San Diego City College. Spring training for this year’s edition of the Wasco Reserve begins Wednesday, May 20, at the baseball diamond on Poso Drive and Poplar Avenue. The Reserve colors are maroon, Columbia blue and black, with that uniform accompanied by black shoes, socks and belt, according to team manager Bill Moore. Housing is not needed during spring training; however, once the regular season begins, the Moore will attempt to pair players with host families. The Wasco Bengals football coaches held a minicamp for youth ages 6-14 Saturday morning. Christopher Vinnie Reyes is the latest addition to the 2020 Wasco Reserve baseball team. Christopher – who prefers to be called "Reyes" – grew up in El Monte. The Wasco Bengals varsity cheerleaders pulled off a difficult feat at two competitions this season. A new coach has been added to the staff of the Wasco Reserve baseball club. Coach Jason Stowers, head coach at Kentucky Christian University, will assist Coach Bill Moore once practices begin in May. Stowers is originally from Bristol, Tenn., but lives in Grayson, Ky. He played high school ball at Tennessee High School in Bristol, and his collegiate experience was at Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes, Ky. Coach Bill Moore of the Wasco Reserve Baseball team has signed the first players for the 2020 team. Nolan Withrow, born in 1995 from Mekinney, Texas, will join the team in Wasco when spring training begins. Withrow was homeschooled and won while playing in the Home School World Series in 2013 and 2014. "I threw a 'no-hitter' during that time," he said.
