I am saddened to see the demolition of the Wasco Amtrak station. I was the editor when the Wasco Amtrak station held its ribbon cutting ceremony, and I remember how proud City Manager Larry Pennell and Mayor Fred West were. Larry Pearson, Tilo Cortez, Danny Espitia and Cheryl Wegman were on the council at that time. I remember local dignitaries attending the ribbon cutting because we were very proud of the new facility and wanted to have a celebration. The building was brand new and would...
Covid-19 isn't something to take lightly. From personal experience, it can be terrifying when you continue having new and different symptoms on a daily basis. I am one of the lucky ones who did not experience a high fever to give me an idea I had it. The fever is what let me know I still had the virus; however, what I got was a horrible headache before I knew I had been exposed and infected. Regular Tylenol wasn't doing the job. One can go through the list of covid-19 symptoms and checkmark...
This is not about who is “afraid” or “not afraid” -- this is about what kind of human being you are. --First of all, I wear a mask in public, not for me, but for [begin ital]you[END ITAL]. --I want you to know that I am educated enough to know that I could be asymptomatic and still give you the virus. --No, I don’t live in fear” of the virus; I just want to be a part of the solution, not the problem. --I don’t feel like the “government is controlling me.” I feel like I’m being a contributing adult to society, and I want to teach others the sa...
I was lucky to meet John Wooner in 2005-06 when he worked for the City of Wasco. What I remember about him was his great personality, warm, friendly smile and easy manner. He was so nice to me when I began working at the Wasco Tribune in 2005. Why does his death hit me so? It’s because when I worked in Arvin and Lamont for over eight years, I would drive on Comanche Road and see a Wooner Street at least several times a day. I always reflected back on the guy I met for a brief while in Wasco and wondered how he was doing. I learned what h...
Parents of children who are graduating from school this May or June are in a special club. I’ve been a member of that club on several occasions. All three of my daughters have graduated from one school or another. These graduations took years of hard work. A common sentiment heard over and over again by people who’ve already raised their children is that it’s necessary to warn new parents to remember enjoy your children while they’re young, because it goes by too fast. Boy, they were right. It doesn’t matter if your child is going from preschoo...
I had the most wonderful Valentine's Day this year because my youngest daughter delivered my first grandson on Valentine's Day. He is the first boy besides his dad to become a part of our immediate family, so he is pretty special. My daughter likes old-fashioned names, and when her firstborn was named, she chose Lilah, and now Lilah is joined by Adley. My heart is filled with so much love for each grandchild; it feels like it's going to explode. Until I became a grandmother, I never understood...
