rowing up and being a teen was not always easy back in the early '60s. I happened to live in the small agricultural town of Shafter, just 18 miles from Bakersfield. Our family budget seemed to be forever challenged and stretched to its maximum, but I always received whatever I needed. My first employment turned out to be a summer job grading potatoes in a local potato shed, Em. H. Mettler & Sons. I looked forward greatly to earning my own money. Teenagers in the Kern County area during these...
Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in March 1876. The first transcontinental telephone wire was connected from New York to San Francisco on June 17, 1914. The first call was not made until July 29, 1914. By the mid-1950s, a lot of the general population were enjoying this wonderful invention. But, for my family in the late 1950s, that may as well have happened on the moon. To say they were not interested in this latest "luxury" would be an understatement. To give my parents credit,...
This fall, Shafter High School started an organics diversion program with their lunch program. We just wanted to say -- You guys are doing awesome! The students put a media presentation together, for all the students, highlighting the new program and why it's important to divert organics out of our landfills and to a proper facility to further reduce the effects of greenhouse gases. We just wanted to thank the students and staff for your dedication to putting the right items in the right bins....
“Make the most of your regrets; never smother your sorrow, but tend and cherish it till it comes to have a separate and integral interest. To regret deeply is to live afresh.” --Henry David Thoreau Ever seen the candy bar commercial on TV where the “biker dude” is getting a new tattoo, which is supposed to read NO REGRETS? Instead because the tattoo artist is a little famished and in need of a sugar fix, she tattoos his arm with the words NO REGERTS. How about that for a permanent NO REGRET? Regrets -- have any? Of course you do — everyone...

Silas is a 1-2-year-old Maltipoo who was rescued after his owners dumped him out on the street. He was a really ratty, matted mess when we got him, and he was absolutely terrified of being beaten. He has warmed up quite nicely and now demands love and attention from his foster family. He is being well-loved until his forever family can be found. Silas is up to date on shots, neutered and microchipped. Come see Silas and other possible additions to the family at the Wasco Animal Shelter, 5409...

Good morning or afternoon, or evening where ever you may be. I decided this morning to sit down and write a little about Christmas and hope. The two words are very definitely connected. Christmas gives me hope. I need hope today. Some people think that in order to be able to talk to someone about Jesus or Christmas you must be a pastor or an elder, at least a deacon, because people have real hard questions about Jesus. Well, I am none of those things as I sit at this computer this morning. I am a person who loves God. I know I need Him. He is...
