  • St. John's Church statue is vandalized

    Toni DeRosa, Wasco Tribune|Jun 11, 2020

A statue at St. John's Evangelical Catholic Church was vandalized last week. The statue that stood on a pedestal at the side of the church on 9th Place was disfigured after someone removed the head and arms. "There is no clear evidence as to who did this," Father Raul Sanchez-Flores said. "The church's camera only captured shadows, and the camera across the street was too far away." All Sanchez-Flores could verify was that someone saw a person cross the street but was unsure what weapon they use...

Posts were spotted on Facebook last week asking Panda Express would open – not an uncommon questions the couple of years -- and finally, on Saturday , the restaurant saw a line of cars waiting in the drive-thru. Panda Express' application was brought to the City Council four years ago but several negotiations needed to take place before the restaurant could obtain its desired spot in front of the Walmart Supercenter on Highway 4...

  • A fond farewell for FFA

    Toni DeRosa, Wasco Tribune|Jun 11, 2020

Due to Covid-19 we had our time in the FFA cut short. Students missed out on monthly meetings, CDE completions, the chance to run for the 2020-21 officer team and our end-of-the-year friends and family banquet. It was heartbreaking to see so many members unable to partake in these activities, so we decided to hold our end-of-the-year banquet over social media. Through this, we were able to recognize our members and community leaders so they knew they were appreciated. As president of the...

  • Responses lagging for 2020 Census

    Jamie Stewart, The Shafter Press|Jun 11, 2020

The 2020 Census has been in motion for months, and the response from this area has been well below the state average, leading Census Bureau staff to take action in attempting to increase the local response numbers. Shafter is lagging behind the average percentage for Kern County, with about a 54% response rate. Wasco is further behind, with a rate of 53%. There are varying opinions on reasons for low response. At a conference held at the Larry E. Reider Institute last year, several authorities...

Jim Neal, Mennonite Brethren Church, Shafter|Jun 11, 2020

By the time you read this I’m hopeful that we will be on our way in the final stages of reopening our nation and world! Who would have ever thought the entire world would go through what we have been in recent months. I can’t help but wonder what lessons we’ve all learned through this, but here are a few that come to mind: --Planning ahead is a good thing but ultimately the Lord is in control (Proverbs 16:9). --Worry can sometimes be god-like in its power, but prayer reminds us of who is really God (Philippians 4:6-7). --Relationships at churc...
