I have heard it said that the only constant in the world is change. I have never found that to be any truer than this year. I know I had big plans and high expectations when the calendar flipped to 2020. How about you? Has 2020 lived up to your expectations so far? Me either. I want to be clear. COVID-19 is serious. It is especially serious to those who find themselves in one of the high-risk categories; over the age of 65, preexisting medical conditions, etc. I know that this virus has...
On this Memorial Day, it seemed kind of surreal. In my lifetime, we have been involved in the Vietnam War, the wars in the Middle East and several events on our homefront, including government buildings in Oklahoma and a tragedy in New York City, in which we were attacked on a large scale with planes flying into the Twin Towers, resulting in the largest terrorist attack ever on American soil. With each occurrence, the patriotism and strength have shown in our military, our civilians and communit...

As they took the diploma, a short bio about each student was presented, listing their GPAs,...
The city would see a 5% increase in the cost of its contracts with the Kern County Sheriff’s Department, City Manager Daniel Ortiz-Hernandez told the City Council Tuesday night. “This amounts to an additional $199,000 to $200,000” per year, Ortiz-Hernandez told the virtual meeting. Nevertheless, “it would be cost-prohibitive for the city to have its own police force,” Mayor Tilo Cortez said. While the budget workshop was available online through Zoom, some attendees were unable to use the link provided in the board packet and had to resort to...
