    In almost all categories, crime in Wasco went down over the past year, according to statistics provided by the Kern County Sheriff’s Department. At the Jan. 7 City Council meeting, two residents had addressed the council with concerns that crime rates had been rising in the city. A review of reported crimes from the Kern County Sheriff’s Office comparing crimes in 2018 against those of 2019 showed the downward trend.     Bengals Cheer took it all this past weekend when they came home with a 1st-place trophy from their national competition in Las Vegas. "The girls competed at Nationals where they received ZERO deductions on their score," advisor Xina Vasquez said. The girls all received National Champion jackets and medals.   • A year of loss at Clemens Elementary

    Clemens Elementary School lost three of their own in 2019. The first teacher to pass away was Dr. Eddie D. Hammon, a special education teacher at Clemens. He was born July 15, 1946 and died Sept. 23 at 73. After high school, Hammon joined the army and achieved the rank of Specialist 5. He attended California State University, Bakersfield, where he earned several graduate degrees. He also earned two doctorate degrees, one from Argosy University and another from Summit Bible College.     The Community Action Partnership of Kern reported that approximately 512 records of CAPK Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program clients’ tax information have been obtained by two former Volunteer Income Tax Assistance employees. The individuals were able to get tax records by a third-party database on multiple occasions between October 2019 and December 2019.
