This is one in an occasional series detailing the everyday events of students in Wasco schools. Everyone at school has his or her favorite cafeteria lunch and a not-so-favorite one. School lunches have changed more than the children of today realize. Seven fifth-graders and eight fourth graders joined me for lunch at Clemens School on Thursday, Jan. 16. I was able to observe all the grades enjoy their lunches and how staff interacted with each other and the students. Times have really changed....

Grades kindergarten through eighth grade were able to participate; however, only fourth through eighth competed for a spot at the county science fair on March 17 at...
There is an obstetrician-gynecologist in town who didn't become a doctor to make lots of money. Instead, he does it for the love of the communities in which he practices. Dr. Rahul Sharma has been practicing medicine for many years. He started with his first practice in Bakersfield, then opened one in Delano and realized that there were a lot of patients who needed to be served between the two cities, so he opened his Wasco practice. Sharma and his partner, Dr. Rahima Sanya, practice surgery...

At the Board of Supervisors meeting on Jan. 14, I have to admit, I have never been more proud. The room was packed by concerned citizens from all walks sharing their concerns and points of view on oil production in Kern County, with key officials from Sacramento present. While the state has been talking about the “managed decline” of the oil industry, we here in Kern County have been concerned about those statements and their impact here. In my letter to the state dated Dec. 17, I invited the...
