The Kern County Wasco branch library is making the most out of its limited hours, librarian Ethan Picman said. The library is currently open Monday and Tuesdays from noon to 6 p.m. “It’s important we do what we can to stay open to the public,” Picman said. “Access to the internet or the ability to print or fax can really affect someone’s livelihood.” Appointments are made at the top of each hour, for example noon, 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. The half-hour slots in between are used for sanitizing the library, Picman said. Sarah Velarde, Special to the Wasco Tribune|Jan 21, 2021

The Wasco Animal Shelter is currently limiting the amount of surrendered pets it can accept — and for a fee. The shelter is charging a $20 surrender fee while still accepting strays. “Overcrowding can be an issue,” said Animal Control Officer Marcos Silva. “With only 17 kennels, if we get more large breeds than small breeds, we immediately lose space. We aim to ensure a safe comfortable stay for our animals while they are here.” The dogs do not tend to stay long in the shelter, Silva said. “After partnering with petfinder.com, our impounded a...

Council members hoped to shed light on rising numbers of gun crimes, and an apparent increase in general crime in the community. • Residents declare resolutions going into 2021

Sarah Velarde, For the Wasco Tribune|Jan 7, 2021

Asking someone their New Year’s resolution can be quite personal. A resolution is defined as a firm decision., and the changing of the year is the ultimate restart button. So, when asked what major life change are you determined to make, people tend to have a fight, flight or freeze approach. They fight for themselves. With a plan of attack, they speak of their approach to change with gusto, like the gentleman leaving True Value with quite a lot of pep in his step. “I will regain financial peace! Thanks to Dave Ramsey.” This young man will...

  • Observations: Winter break will give way to spring changes

Sarah Velarde, For the Wasco Tribune|Dec 17, 2020

Winter is coming, and I’m not just quoting my current favorite series. With winter and series binging comes the long-awaited Christmas break. Last year at this time, parents would be shopping for their children, trying to find the perfect holiday program attire. Teachers would be working tirelessly to fit in as many festive lesson plans as possible. College students would be solidifying winter recess plans; a ski trip with friends or family bonding. Seeing that Cal State Bakersfield will be on break from Dec. 8 until the beginning of the s...

Sarah Velarde, Special to the Wasco Tribune|Dec 10, 2020

In the Year of the Pandemic, how is the Christmas season in Wasco different f r o m eve r y o t h e r year? Being a Shafter native, the writer was eager to dissect the town's decorations and/or lack thereof. In Wasco, I wondered why hardly any lights adorned businesses downtown, and why Highway 46 was so dark. Then reality set in, humbled by the "why" while cruising the City of Roses. We're In the middle of Covid- 19's wrath! Now is not the time to critique. All small businesses have had and...
