The Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church will be holding their annual Garage Sale on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4, as one of their main fundraisers of the year. Charges against former Shafter code enforcement officer Mathhew Maldonado have been dropped by the Kern County District Attorney’s Office. Maldonado had faced five counts of felony child molest/annoy. He was arrested in January 2022 and had his case continued for over a year. Judge had ruled that Maldonado’s three previous investigations could not be introduced during this trial, making it more difficult for the prosecution to move forward with their case. The Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church hosted an event on Sunday to raise funds and awareness for a proposed thrift store in Shafter. Katie Wiebe, Melissa Bergen and Nancy Neufeld were on hand to help raise funds as part of the Mennonite Central Committee's group of stores across the nation. Kern County Public Works, in partnership with American Refuse, will be holding a bulky waste event in Shafter on Saturday Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., in the parking lot of the Superior Courthouse in Shafter. The Shafter High Generals evened their league record at 2-2 after a big win at Delano 56-14 on Friday night. In one of the most complete games of the season, the Generals had contributions by all phases of the game, including offense, defense and special teams. GROW Academy of Shafter participated in the Wasco Rose Festival with a float depicting characters from the Wizard of Oz, including the Tin Man, Scarecrow, Lion and Dorothy. Two attacks on their church in the last two months hasn't stopped the Shafter campus of the Ridgeview Community Church from moving forward.
